Our games are specially designed for groups of 6-14 players to host themselves. They are ideal for private parties and virtual team-building. Games are easy to host and so the host plays a suspect.

Our online murder mystery parties run well across Zoom, Microsoft Teams etc. All guests join together on a single call. For the main party, you do not need to use Breakout Rooms (Zoom or Microsoft Teams), although you can use them for the optional pre-party fun and sleuthing if desired.

Get the Most Out of Your Virtual Murder Mystery: A Few Party Tips

Use Costumes & Decorations to Add to Fun

Many of our customers have gone to town with themed costumes for online murder mysteries. Some have also added token decorations to the area where the camera will focus – or have used a Zoom virtual background. Both significantly add to the fun of the game.
Mute the Microphone During Audios

Zoom parties aren’t the same as face-to-face gatherings: if your guests’ microphones pick up on background sounds like coughing or a dog barking or even the rustle of a crisp packet, this can interfere with the audio you are playing. We suggest you mute everyone’s microphones for both the Audio Introduction and the Audio Solution.
Share Clues on Screen

Have the clues for each round ready so that you can share them on screen when a player is reading them and later if anyone asks for a clue to be reshown.

Also, it is a good idea to have the clues to hand just in case a player forgets to bring their clue. (We did have this happen to us once and having a duplicate copy of the clue enabled us to continue with the smooth flow of the party.)

How our Virtual Murder Mystery Parties Work

Further detailed instructions can be found in our How to Host a Virtual Murder Mystery page. In outline, each guest plays a different fun character in a murder investigation; each guest plays remotely from their own home or office. The format is:

Optional Pre-Party Sleuthing and Fun

Guests use the instructions given in their pre-party booklets to scheme, backstab and try to achieve their own (conflicting) objectives during a series of short video chats.

This is the only part of your party where you would need to use a video call environment that uses multiple rooms such as Breakout Rooms (Zoom or Microsoft Teams). As it is completely optional, many hosts skip this for virtual gatherings. Some hosts, however, build excitement for the main party by running this the day before. One host said she asked her guests to WhatsApp message each other in the week leading up to the game.

Main Party Begins

All guests join the same online video call. Two volunteers read aloud the game instructions (given on pages 4-5 of the party booklets).

The host sets the theme of the murder mystery by playing the short Audio Introduction.

6 Rounds

Guests interact according to the instructions given in their party booklets. The rounds take the form of our unique flexible script where guests can simply read the speeches they are given – or can ad-lib and use their own words and make the role their own.

The Red Herrings Are Cleared Up – and the Murderer (or Murderers) Are Revealed

Guests complete an accusation sheet saying who they think the killer is and giving motives and evidence. They also vote for the best actor, best costume and best decorations.

An optional (but recommended) Whodunnit round clears up the red herrings and explains which of the suspects could NOT be the killer.

The host plays the short Audio Solution.

Guests stay on the call and chat about the murder mystery. After the call ends, the host sends out award certificates.
