Running Your 1960s' Murder Mystery Party

Fab Decor Ideas for a Groovy Pad

Get some vibrant second-hand scarves or fabric remnants from charity shops and cover walls, sofas and tables with a clashing mix of bright pinks, oranges, greens, turquoises, reds and purples. The more the colours clash, the better.

It's the Summer of Love, man, and hippies are cool, man - anything featuring love and peace signs is groovy. Get some psychedelic or hippie artwork from free sites such as pixabay.com or pexels.com and use these to cover empty wine bottles - great for candles and for flowers. Or use colourful tissue paper or wrapping paper.

Hang a warm fabric remnant on your walls and use the artwork in your party pack to create a groovy den:

Any photos of 60s' pop stars or actors are hip.

Decorate your walls with a groovy psychedelic Sixties' scene setter - use any leftovers to cover a cheap vase or piece of card or picture frame etc.

Use the free psychedelic artwork in your party pack or print some psychedelic op art prints from the internet. Mount on cheap card or tissue paper and/or frame in cheap frames from charity shops or car boot sales.

Use the printouts in your pack to create a shrine to poor, dear Pearl. Add candles - real or fake.

If you have an old-style phone, phone your home number from a mobile just before the final Whodunnit audio (which is given as a message from Pete LJ Phoenix). When the phone rings, get a character such as Annie or Pat Psychello to pretend to "speak" to Pete LJ Phoenix.

Lights could have coloured bulbs or Chinese lantern covers; lava lamps are in, man.

Create an investigation table to hold the prompt cards (for when guests arrive) and then the clues as the party progresses - cover with some bright material.

Sites such as eBay, Amazon and Zazzle sell cheap bright cottons and velvets, tie-dye paper and tissue paper, psychedelic table runners, colourful tablecloths and napkins.

... and Pete L.J.Phoenix is a Music Mogul so be as Musical as You Wish!

Musical instruments, record s as place mats and coasters, records as mobiles, love and peace bottles

Get some old LPs and singles (charity shops, car boots sales, online). Use in lots of creative ways.

Create groovy placemats with the records. Use singles for coasters; try the insets in your party pack to add colour and a 60s' feel.
Blue-tack the record covers to the walls for a fab, groovy look.
Use the records to make cake-stands and hanging mobile displays. (Your party pack includes the inside centre circles for both LP size and single size.)
Or spray-paint an LP gold, add the LP centre we supply and hang as one of the "platinum records" old Pete L.J. Phoenix would have collected. (His record label, PLJ Phoenix Records, signed all the famous stars of the decade!)
Put one of the printouts we supply in an old frame and surround with records to create a focal point for your shindig or a stunning entrance sign.
Use one of the record centres in your party pack, stick the record onto a coloured background and hang as art.

Tip: to get placemats that form a heat-barrier between hot food and the table, use several layers of records separated by the back covers and the inner sleeves.

Tip: cover the record centres with the LP (or single) record centres we supply for a colourful, uniform look.

Use musical instruments (guitars, drums, pianos etc) as decorations. We balanced guitars on a sideboard draped with an old purple sheet for a fab musical look and hung some colourful scarves and tablecloths on the walls. We also used miniature drums and guitars as a table centrepiece.

Age Guidance & Sensitivities

This is intended as an adult party, but many parents will be happy to include teenagers aged 13+. However, this is very much down to parental judgment depending upon the individual teenager.

Mild Sexual and Drugs References

It's the 1960s, man, the decade of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Affairs are alleged (and denied). Allegations of "strange psychedelic" drug misuse are alleged (and denied). A scientist works for a company called DoDGY Pharmaceuticals. No graphic details are given, however. Our suggested dialogue contains the odd mild innuendo but does not contain explicit details or bad language.

Mild Violence

A murder has been committed prior to the party.

Pat Psychello (and also Pat Junior in the party game) may be an - alleged - East End thug, and may make some vague, comical threats and touch TOY weapons, but no graphic details are given.

There are allegations of mysterious disappearances, but no graphic details are given.

Suggested accents

Scottish, East End. French (8-10 player versions upwards).

Sensitive Subjects

This is intended as a light-hearted bit of fun. As with anything, however, life experiences dictate how your guests will react.

The victim was stabbed with a letter opener. There are allegations of previous disappearances in the hippie commune. Strange psychedelic drug use is alleged.

How Our Murder Mysteries Work

Murder Mid-Party?: No - the victim is killed before the party begins so all players can keep the same role throughout the evening.

Host Plays a Character?: Yes.

Random murderer?: No – we carefully organize clues throughout the game so that only a particular person or persons can be guilty. We find that this gives a more satisfactory solution than whodunnit games where the killer is chosen on the night.

Format

Short optional initial mingling session - guests get to know the main themes of the evening and learn who is who while solving personal objectives.
Audio introduction is played.
6 rounds with a "flexible" script - players can substitute their own words, ad-lib and don't know what others will say.
Optional interactive whodunnit round - many red herrings are cleared up as everyone declares their innocence and hams up their role for a final time.
Audio solution is played.

As with all of our murder mystery games, these are A4 size so they are printer-friendly. We have also subtly reduced the colour density so visuals are attractive but not so ink-heavy. Note that, for some printers, some printouts may have faint white lines at intervals; this is caused by the type of printer and/or the ink levels but should not matter too much as these lines should not be noticeable at a distance.

Optional dinner table printouts – place setting cards for each character and editable menus (Word) with a choice of designs. There are also cupcake toppers and “Peace and Love” tablemats.

An excellent evening had by all!
We played the 8-10 version and loved it.
It was easy to organise, just pinged across a few emails a couple of days before to each guest.
It was well written and it was great to have a script to follow, but could ad lib if you fancied.
It was so great to have something to look forward too in the middle of lockdown 3. Everyone was talking about it all week in the run up, discussing costumes, getting into their characters, Drake even wrote two songs!

The host information provided everything I needed, and the guests were highly creative in their costumes, given the store closures due to the pandemic.
